detail of the passion façade of antoni gaudí's sagrada família cathedral, barcelona, spain. the lettering was created by catalan sculptor josep maria subirachs who, like gaudí before him, made the cathedral his residence.
the letterforms on these doors took shape first as individual plaster casts, assembled similarly to how lead type is set in traditional print process, and finally were cast in bronze. the texture is unbelievably rich; see an enlargement for more detail.
